WHAT IS A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST?

To put it simply, clinical psychologists are trained to work in clinical settings (hospitals, psychiatric institutions etc.) and to work with clinical pathology such as schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder, clinical depression, and several other psychiatric disorders.


Clinical psychologists are trained in diagnosing and treating mental illness.

Our training prepares us for inpatient therapy as well as outpatient therapy. We are taught a variety of therapeutic approaches however independently choose the one/s which inform our practice. This is often tailored to the specific needs of the individual, couple or family.

A clinical psychologist is trained to provide therapy AND assessment. Some of the most common assessments a psychologist performs are- cognitive assessments, personality assessments, emotional assessments, neuropsychological as well as forensic assessments.

Clinical psychologists do NOT prescribe medication. Often, clinical psychologists work with allied professionals such as psychiatrists, occupational therapists and social workers.
